More than 18,000 vacant lots across the city of Flint have long been a challenge, contributing to illegal dumping, safety concerns, and environmental deterioration, ultimately impacting quality of life for Flint residents.

The ‘Cleaner. Greener. Safer.’ campaign aims to better engage the community to ensure Flint’s green spaces remain clean, safe, and sustainable, and improve coordination among existing programs. Efforts will include better coordination of community-led cleanups, illegal dumping removal, dead/dying tree removal, tree plantings, billboards, and public service announcements.

Genesee County Land Bank

Clean & Green

Clean & Green is a program of the Genesee County Land Bank Authority that supports innovative community groups and organizations in the cleaning, maintaining, and beautifying of otherwise vacant properties in Genesee County. Clean & Green engaged areas compared to street segments with vacant, abandoned lots without community-engaged greening activities have: 30 percent fewer assaults, 40 percent fewer violent crimes overall, lower rates of child maltreatment and lower rates of youth gun violence.

Activate vacant land

Whether you are looking to beautify your neighborhood, mow the lot down the street, or need more room to grow your own food, the Land Bank is dedicated to making its lots available for your greening and gardening desires. We have Adopt-a-lot, Lease-a-Lot or purchase options available.

Report a property issue on a Land Bank property

Report issues or changes in condition of Land Bank properties through our complaint tracker. We prioritize complaints through a process called "triage."  By triaging complaints, we are able to take action on the issues that are most hazardous to residents first.

Genesee Conservation District

The Genesee Conservation District is a local unit of government, established in 1946 and encompasses all of Genesee County. We aim to connect people with nature and inspire them to conserve and protect land, air, water, and wildlife today for future generations. We promote natural resources conservation in our community by coordinating technical, financial, and educational resources to meet the needs of residents, land managers, and farmers. The District collaborates with local municipalities, other governmental units, such as the USDA-Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS), and NGOs in the delivery of voluntary, non-regulatory conservation practices.

5 Ways YOU can join in keeping Flint Cleaner, Greener and Safer!

Don’t Litter and Pick Up Litter
  • Carry a Small Trash Bag: If you're walking through your neighborhood or a local park and notice litter, pick it up and throw it away. Small actions like this go a long way!
  • Adopt-A-Spot: Some residents choose a particular area (like a park bench or a street corner) to monitor and keep clean. Vacant land is available for adoption through the Genesee County Land Bank lots available program.
Participate in Local Clean-Up Efforts
  • Join Local Clean-Up Events: Volunteer in community-wide clean-up days, where residents come together to pick up trash in parks, along streets, or near schools.
  • Organize Neighborhood Clean-Up Drives: If there's no scheduled clean-up event, residents can organize their own, gathering neighbors, friends, and family for a day of cleaning.
Report Problem Properties
  • Notify authorities Illegal Dumping: Notify the authorities if you observe illegal dumping in your neighborhood. Document with photos, try to get a license plate number and/or a clear image of the person dumping. Report to Crime Stoppers immediately.
  • Report illegal dumping: Send a complaint for dumping removal to the City of Flint Blight Dept. or the Genesee County Land Bank (depending on ownership)
  • Report Trash Hotspots: If you notice an area near a business that is frequently dirty, encourage those business owners to take responsibility for cleaning it up or participating in local initiatives.
Dispose of Waste Properly
  • Use Trash and Recycling Bins: Always throw trash and recyclables in designated bins. Make sure to sort waste correctly into recycling, compost, and landfill bins.
  • Don’t Litter: Never litter in public spaces, on streets, or in parks.
  • Avoid Illegal Dumping: Be mindful of not dumping large items like furniture or electronics in unauthorized areas. Household waste services  offer bulk trash pick-up services or recycling programs.
Participate in Community Decision-Making
  • Teach Children: Instill good habits in children by teaching them to dispose of trash properly and recycle at home and at school.
  • Lead by Example: Show others how easy it is to maintain a clean environment by keeping your own space tidy, not littering, and recycling.
  • Advocate for Clean Green Spaces: Support or advocate for the maintenance of parks, public spaces, and local green spaces.
  • Support Clean Up Initiatives: Get involved in government discussions about improving waste management.
